Datenschutzerklärung

Stand: Oktober 2026

Privacy policy

Last updated: October 2026 · Translation; the German version is authoritative.

This privacy policy applies to the web app Zugle, a daily train race across Germany on the real timetable. Zugle uses no cookies and has no user accounts; visits are counted anonymously (section 5). Your game progress stays in your browser (section 6). Personal data, above all your IP address, is only processed as far as technically necessary to deliver the page, the timetable data and the map.

1. Controller

The controller within the meaning of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is:

Robin Sticher
Roonstr. 23a
76137 Karlsruhe
Germany
Email: kontakt@robin-sticher.de

Further details are in the imprint (Impressum).

2. Hosting

The app runs as a Docker container managed with Coolify on a virtual private server (VPS) of Hetzner Online GmbH, Industriestr. 25, 91710 Gunzenhausen, Germany. Hetzner's servers are located exclusively in Germany and the EU. All requests reach the app through a reverse proxy (Traefik), which forwards them to the application; the connection is TLS-encrypted (https). For details, see Hetzner's privacy policy.

A data processing agreement pursuant to Art. 28 GDPR is in place with Hetzner. It ensures that Hetzner processes the personal data of visitors only on instruction and in compliance with the GDPR. The legal basis for hosting is Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR; the legitimate interest is reliable and secure delivery of the app.

3. Server log files

Every time the page is loaded and every time the app requests data from the server (the game loads, for example, the departures of every station you arrive at), the application server logs:

Depending on the reverse proxy's configuration, browser type and operating system (user agent) and the previously visited page (referrer) may also be recorded.

This data is used to deliver the app, to find errors and to defend against abuse and attacks. The legal basis is Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR; the legitimate interest is the secure and stable operation of the website. The data is not passed on to third parties and is deleted as soon as it is no longer needed for these purposes.

4. No cookies, no user accounts

Zugle sets no cookies, includes no third-party tracking or advertising services and offers no user accounts. Your moves and results are not sent to the server: it only learns which departures your browser asks for (section 3), and stores nothing about it except the server log files.

5. Web analytics with Umami

This website uses Umami, a privacy-friendly web analytics tool. Umami runs on a server operated by us (umami.dersticher.de), from which your browser loads a small script and to which it reports the page view; no data is transferred to third parties.

Umami sets no cookies and collects no personal data. Only aggregated, anonymised usage statistics are recorded (e.g. page views, country of origin, browser used). Identification of individual persons is neither possible nor intended. The part of a link after the “#” sign (in Zugle, the id of a practice race) is not recorded.

The use of Umami is based on Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR. We have a legitimate interest in analysing the use of our website in anonymised form in order to improve it. As no personal data is processed, consent is not required.

Further information about Umami can be found at: https://umami.is/privacy.

6. Game progress and settings in your browser (localStorage)

The app stores in your browser's local storage (localStorage): your settings for colour scheme (light/dark) and language, the progress of races you are playing (your journey so far) and your results of the daily races (for statistics and your streak). Progress is removed automatically three days after you last played it. These entries stay on your device and are not sent to the server. Storing them is strictly necessary to provide these functions you requested and is therefore permitted without consent under § 25(2) no. 2 TDDDG (German Telecommunications Digital Services Data Protection Act). You can remove the entries at any time by clearing this site's data in your browser.

When you share your result, the app copies a text to your clipboard or hands it to your device's share function. Where you pass it on is up to you; the app sends it nowhere.

7. Base map: OpenFreeMap

Your browser loads the base map (map tiles, map style, symbols and the fonts of the map labels) directly from OpenFreeMap (tiles.openfreemap.org), a free map service based on OpenStreetMap data. It is provided by Hyperknot Software Kft., Petőfi Sándor utca 48., 2724 Újlengyel, Hungary. For technical reasons, your IP address and the usual connection data such as the browser identification and the address of this website are transmitted.

According to its privacy policy, OpenFreeMap does not store IP addresses in its regular server logs, only anonymised data (e.g. browser type, referring page, time). Only in case of abuse or security incidents are IP addresses logged temporarily, for at most 30 days. OpenFreeMap sets no cookies.

OpenFreeMap currently delivers the map through Cloudflare's content delivery network (Cloudflare, Inc., USA), so your requests to tiles.openfreemap.org are answered by Cloudflare servers. Data may be transferred to the USA in the process. Cloudflare is certified under the EU-US Data Privacy Framework, for which the European Commission has adopted an adequacy decision (Art. 45 GDPR). See Cloudflare's privacy policy for details.

The legal basis is Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR. The legitimate interest is a working map display, which the game is played on, without having to run a separate map server for it.

8. Fonts

The app's fonts (Barlow Semi Condensed and Azeret Mono) are served by this app's own server. There is no connection to Google Fonts or any other font service. The fonts of the map labels come from OpenFreeMap (section 7).

9. Timetable and track data

The timetable data (gtfs.de, data by DELFI e. V.) and the track data of DB InfraGO AG are downloaded by this app's server, not by your browser. They contain no personal data, and no data about you is sent to these providers when you use the app.

10. Your rights

You have the right of access to your personal data (Art. 15 GDPR), to rectification (Art. 16), erasure (Art. 17), restriction of processing (Art. 18) and data portability (Art. 20). You can object at any time, on grounds relating to your particular situation, to processing based on Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR (Art. 21). To do so, contact the controller named above.

You also have the right to lodge a complaint with a data protection supervisory authority (Art. 77 GDPR), in particular in the member state of your habitual residence, place of work or place of the alleged infringement.
